The neon signs of the animal world, fireflies have been impressing us non-luminescent humans for millenia. Though their flashes are just a gaudy advertisement for sex, it is no less beautiful — even more so when you photograph them with a long exposure camera. These photos from Japan capture fireflies as little more than beautiful points of light, while others capture the zigzagging path of the moving insects. It’s great stuff, making the forest look almost magical.

An orphaned Common Squirrel Monkey is in very good hands at Warsaw Zoo. The infant was born at the zoo on March 28th and is now being bottle fed and raised by dedicated caretakers. The tiny monkey is male who weighed just 167 grams at birth. He is healthy and doing well. [Read more…]
As far as adorable photos go on the Internet, nothing can quite beat the ones of a young child growing up with his or her pet. Today we’d like to introduce you to Stasha Becker aka @northwestmommy, the mother and photographer of her 4-year-old son Julian and their huge dog, a five-year-old Newfoundland named Max. The family lives in the Pacific Northwest, on an island just above Seattle. As Stasha states, “Our island is one big playground and there are adventures galore.” While many of Stasha’s photos of her son and their dog are simple portraits taken (what looks like) in front of their white garage door, many of them also show the pair enjoying themselves outside. Whether they’re peacefully watching the waves at the beach or scoping out possible intruders of their make-shift fort, the duo seem like they share a genuine love for each other, one that makes them inseparable. The Pug is a small, stocky, square, thickset dog. The round head is massive with a short, blunt, square-shaped muzzle. Moles on the cheeks are considered beauty spots. The teeth meet in a slight undershot bite. The very large, prominent eyes are dark. The small, thin ears are either rose or button shaped. The face has large, deep wrinkles. The high-set tail is curled over the back and a double curl is preferred in the show ring. Dewclaws are usually removed.A delightful blend of dignity and comedy, the pug is an amiable, playful and confident companion. It can be stubborn and headstrong, but it is pleasant and generally willing to please. It loves to cavort and show off.
But one most important characteristics of the beauty of this dog…are his adorable big and shiny eyes! This is Pugsly, he is 8.5 years old and just recently went blind last summer from Pigmentary Keratitis which is quite common in Pugs of all ages. He’s learning his way around, and has already had some improvement since he has learned warnings words like “watch out”.
