Health 101: The Pet Edition

Pets. They enrich our life no end. They are the extra family member we never knew we needed. Once they’re in our lives, we would never be without them. As with our children, we go above and beyond to keep our pets happy. We want to give them the best life possible. We surround them with toys and attention to help their days pass in the best possible way. We take them for walks when it’s the last thing we want to do. We rise to our pet-owning responsibilities with gusto. But, have you considered that giving your pet a good life isn’t where your responsibilities end? You may not have studied at vet school, but every pet owner needs to have some basic knowledge to ensure their pet stays healthy, as well as happy. Here are a few of the things you need to be sure to do!

Finding a veterinary surgery is important. Finding a good one is even more so. Get your pet signed up to somewhere like Railway Avenue Veterinary Hospital at the first chance you get. You don’t want to leave this until you have no other choice. When your pet falls ill, time may be of the essence. When you’re already signed up, you can call up and take your pet no worry. But, if you fail to take this simple step, you could cost yourself valuable time when the moment arrives. You could even struggle to find an appointment at all. Signing up doesn’t take a minute, but it’ll make a huge difference.

Chances are, you already have a routine of sorts with your pet. If not, it might be time you implemented one. Routines are crucial when it comes to our animals because they reveal problems as soon as they arise. You don’t need a routine to know your pet, but it can help to have points of contact that are always the same. Waking up in the morning is always a good one. You haven’t seen your animal overnight, and anything could have happened. Make sure to take time and greet them in the morning. When you do this every day, you’ll become used to how they greet you. That way, you’ll notice if something is different. It’s important to feed them at the same time, for this reason, too.

Like with any stress we don’t want to face, we often react to our family pet’s illness with a wait and see attitude. We think that we’ll see how they are the next day, and take them if the problem is the same. It makes sense that we want to avoid the cost and stress of a vet visit. But, that wait and see attitude could prove fatal. Animals such as rabbits can get extremely ill, fast. Rather than wait, take action. Even if that action is to search online to diagnose the problem, it’s better than nothing.
